The Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) programme, funded by the UK’s FCDO in partnership with UNCTAD, aims to reduce pollution from manufacturing in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. With a £24.6 million investment, it supports research and pilot projects addressing environmental and health impacts, particularly from SMEs and informal sectors.

In September 2020, DFID merged with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to form the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) .​
